What is the Domain Name System?
Simply put, it is a very unique name for your web site, you need to reserve it or register it so as no one else can have it, it is yours for as long as you pay the annual subscription fees.
Lotsa is a reseller of domain name registrations; this is like the oil companies that make the fuel to sell to you, the end user, through service stations, but beware the price resellers charge for this service does vary widely!

A more technical description is that the Domain Name System (DNS) helps users to find their way around the Internet. Every computer on the Internet has a unique address – just like a telephone number – which is a complex string of numbers called an "IP Address" (IP stands for "Internet Protocol"). But it is hard to remember everyone's IP address as a set of numbers. The DNS makes it easier by allowing a familiar string of letters (the "domain name") to be used instead of the cumbersome numbers of the pure IP address. So instead of typing 192.0.34.65, you can type www.icann.org. It is a "mnemonic" device that makes addresses easier to remember.

Translating the name into the IP address is called "resolving the domain name." The goal of the DNS is for any Internet user any place in the world to reach a specific website IP address by entering its domain name. Domain names are also used for reaching e-mail addresses and for other Internet applications.
